Thanks for the generator help

It turns out that what I thought was a flange on the shaft was just a very tight collar, and when I pressed the pulley end of the armature in, while supporting the end plate, in a hydraulic press, it came out okay. I was afraid of wrecking the aluminum end plate, but it came out okay. I couldn't get the woodruff key out without wrecking it, but that's no big deal.

The puzzling thing is there's a very strange looking seal on the shaft, with no part number on it, a space behind the seal that appears to drain to a plugged drain hole, and a gear in that space that doesn't mesh with anything. Anybody have any idea what that gear's for. It's inside the pulley end of the generator housing, and it's about 1.5" in diameter.

As long as I have it apart, I'm going to try to get new double-sealed bearings, even though the old bearings feel okay, so I won't have grease getting loose inside the generator. Another strange thing is that one of the bearings is an NTN made in Japan, even though it sure didn't look like this generator had ever been apart before.
