It appears that the hose must be installed below the thermostat to circulate coolant before the engine warms up enough to open the thermostat. Without that hose hooked up, engine water would not circulate at all until the water in the front of the intake manifold got hot enough to open the thermostat - not good to have uneven heating in the engine.

I am very curious what the factory hose setup was.
