To test for wear, clamp the long axle side down in a vise and press down with the short axle and twist in bothe directions. If play exists, you need to rebuild.

To disassemble:

1. Drive out the thrust ball pin on side of UJ

2. Bounce the short axle end on a block of wood to dislodge the drive thrust ball pin.

3. Clamp the short axle end in a vise and swing the long shaft to one side and raise the long axle to pull the two axles slightly apart.

4. Turn the thrust ball with fingers until the groove lines up with one of the drive balls.

5. Remove the drive ball with fingers. The remaining drive and thrust ball will drop out separating the two axles.

6. Turn the short shaft with the UJ down and the thrust pin should drop out of the shaft.

Inspection of balls:

1. Measure each ball with a micrometer to determine if they are round and smooth. Any with excessive wear, cracks, or flat spots should be replaced.

2. Identify the smallest ball used during original assembly. You want the two largest balls diagonally across from each other on assembly. If you use a new kit, balls cannot exceed .002 in size difference. You want to keep drive balls within .001 of each other.

3. Inspect UJ for wear, cracks, etc.

Assembly:

1. Clamp the short axel in a vice w/UJ in up position.

2. Install the center ball pin in the short shaft.

3. Place the center ball in the socket of the short shaft and place the long shaft in position on the ball.

4. Install three of the drive balls, two largests diagonally apart.

5. To install the fourth ball, turn the thrust ball towards the ball being installed until the groove lines up.

6. Swing axle to one side and push the 4th ball in place and straighten up the axle.

7. Remove the assembly from the vise and clamp the long axle in the vise.

8. Swing the short axle to one side and lift it slightly to loosen the thrust ball and turn it to aline the hole in it with the pin to allow the pin to drop in the thrust ball hole.

9. Push the two section of the assembly together firmly.

10. You can make an adaptor to fit at the base of axle/UJ to attach a torque wrench. Force the assembly together and move the torque wrench back and forth. Preload should be between 20-24 foot-pounds.

11. If you are good, drive in ball pin lock and center punch both ends of lock to hold pin in place.

12. Lubricate UJ/balls with grease.
