... your TDC mark, you should confirm that the #1 piston is in fact at TDC when aligned with the pointer. A couple of reasons why this might not be so, and you will be tearing your hair no knowing what is going on. Just remove the #1 plug, stick in a coathanger, and make sure that TDC is as advertised by the timing marks. Then time away.

I knew an old (!) guy who never used a light. He just retarded the timeing until the engine ran "bad", then advanced it until it ran "smooth", then advanced 2-3 degrees beyond that. Seemed to work.
