The name came from the polyspherical shape of the heads with the 318 running from 1959-1966. The LA318 was introduced in 1967 but some 318 polys may have slipped through into 67. They are a great motor for torque and the "new" Hemi's are closer to the polys than the old style Hemi. The easiest way to tell the 318's apart is the two bolts holding the valve covers and the scalloped lower edge. The valves are also oriented IEIEIE the LA EIEEIE. I'm no expert on these motors but I do have two and they are good engines. And yes parts are avilable with a set of .060 over pistons on ebay right now for cheap so far. The Weiand aluminum 4 barrel manifolds pop up now and again but are usually in the $350+ range. MoparNorm has headers for the 318 poly which really make this engine come alive. Hope this helps shed some light. Norm is THE man on polys.
