That's why the crime rate is so low in Illinois. I hear California's gonna require all new guns have a microprinted serial number etched in the firing pin so as to identify whose gun each cartridge was fired in. Obviously robbers and murderers never use old guns and if they do get a new gun, they're too dumb to know how to operate a file or a piece of sandpaper. What the Heller decision said is that a local government can't make it flat-out unlawful to have a pistol that's usable for defense. Now it'll take lawsuits against other cities with extreme restrictions to define just how far they can go in regulating them.

There's one reason I'm hopeful we won't get any more gun control out of this Democratic "landslide", however -- the party bosses know that's their weakness and that's a big part of what kept them out of office for so long. Just as it took a Democrat (Clinton) to push through serious welfare reform, because the Republicans were afraid to touch it out of fear of being called heartless towards the poor, any gun ban these days would have to come from the Republicans. Remember McCain wanted to ban private-party gun sales (any transaction would have to go through an FFL holder and be checked and recorded), and Bush wanted to sign a permanent "assault weapons" ban.
