I think maybe you guys are not understanding the relationship of the cap to the carrier case.

The cap's inner shoulder that is machined .002 larger than the case. It is that interference fit that holds the cap tight, not the threads.

The case needs to be heated uniformly around the upper edge (while trying to avoid heating the cap directly) only until solder will begin to melt. A few sharp blows to the caps webs and then the use of your fabricated tool will unscrew the cap.
You will likely need to replace the fiber thrust washers as the old ones will be very brittle, if not already destroyed from age and use. The side and spider gears, pins and washers are a very cheap kit and this would be the perfect time to replace them.

Reinstalling the cap is much easier as only the case gets heated while the cap remains cool. Be very carfull to not over heat the case, or the new fiber thrust washers for the side gears will get damaged.
