I emailed my chemist friend. Hopefully he can explain it. Maybe this winter when I don't have anything better to do, I'll do some experiments in test tubes with various kinds of alcohol and fuels. Right now what I'm burning in the wrecker is kind of a soup of every combustible liquid I can find, so it's not clear what's going on.
