I read an article about a year ago about establishing a bass pond in Progressive Farmer magazine. It was written by an expert.
He said a few important things that I recall.
1. Only stock bass, and blue gill for the bass to eat. Do not put in catfish, carp or crappie in.
2. Need to control weeks to a point so you can enjoy the pond.
3. There obviously needs to be some deep water, or the pond is spring fed, so if there is a draught you are o.k.
On my farm pond, I got fish from the state, free. The stipulation was you had to let the public fish in it. That was over 20 years ago.
If I had to do it over again, I would buy the fish. I have had trouble with trespassers, and want to have control over the pond and who has access.
I have some nice bass in my pond, but someone threw some bullheads in, which are supposedly a no-no as far as keeping it clean. I am not too worried about it though.
