I found this truck in Lindsay California where it had been used on the Imoto Brothers farm since they bought from the military as surplus in the late 1940’s.
The Imotos were Japanese Americans, and their family had been interned in Poston, AZ during WWII. Despite the internment, four of them served in the US Army with the highly decorated 442nd Regimental Combat Team during the war.
So, while I suspect the truck never left the US, It was driven by members of one of the most decorated units in WWII. They didn't drive it into battle, but used it to help rebuild their farm and livelihoods after their family's internment and their service to our country. I'm proud to have had a chance to restore a vehicle these guys owned.
The engine currently in it is a Dodge civilian production flat head 6 cylinder (same size/look as the T214, but not the right serial number). The T214 motor is included, and while it runs, it will need an overhaul (rings at least).
The bed is from an earlier style WC-51, with steel sides and the larger storage box on the front driver's side… (by 1945, Dodge had changed to a composite bed with wood sides to save metal for the war.) The Imotos said this is the bed that was on it when they bought it surplus, so the swap was probably done as part of a depot level repair/rebuild program.
I hate to see it go, but our oldest daughter started college this year and she has four siblings following close behind, so the hobby has to down size.
