I have never had anything stolen (knock on wood), so I am not sure how this works with the courts, insurance, and all. But, if they were stolen from Mike, then are they not still Mike's property? If so, then he should not have to buy them back from anyone. They should either be given back to him or he should be reimbursed monetarily once the guys are found guilty. With that said the cores in the shape they are in have a value of $370.00 according to what the scrap dealer paid the crooks. I can't believe the scrap dealer would be allowed to keep stolen property he bought.
I say Mike should accept the cores back in the condition they are in and sell them for scrap himself. Maybe he can find a scrap dealer who would give him more than $370.00, or hold onto them in hopes that the value of copper goes up even more. Or, leave the cores; wait until the ruling and maybe he will be awarded a greater value determined by the judge.
The closest I ever came to something like this was serving on a jury for a murder case. So I understand all is not quite like you see on the news or other TV shows.
