Brian. I bought a '98 12 valve with auto a year ago to plow snow. I drive it all the time. It's a great truck. I have an '06 HO Dodge, but I drive the 12v to stop the build up of miles on the '06. Anyway, look into this oil filtration system. I have one on both trucks. They really keep the oil clean, which is most important for any engine. http://filtrationsolutionsww.com/
The nice thing about the 12v, is you can add huge power and torque with very small adjustments to the injector pump, etc. Also check out http://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/12-valve-engine-transmission-1994-1998/ It's a good resource and they probably won't call you stupid. :-)
