At first glance the military and civilian 1940 fenders look the same, front and rear, but they aren't.

The height of the wheel clearance cutout is about the same, but the horizontal clearance is about 4" or 5" more, giving the cutout more of a part-eliptical shape rather than a half-round. I've got a good pic of two trucks side by side that shows the difference, but not on this PC. The extreme rear lower horizontal edge of the rear fenders is also angled on the VC pickups to account for the fact that the bed is mounted higher than on the civilian and has extra clearance there too.

You can convert civilian to military by reworking the wire-turned edge, but not the other way round. Several well-known restored VC trucks were fitted with good civilian fenders but they don't look 'right' at all

Of course full rear fenders are a saleable item, military or civilian
