when i was a youngster the Canadian Pacific train station was about a half mile from our place. The big excitement was the big selkirk steam engines chugged in, they were a very impresive sight and "no" mistaking them from a distance by the smoke and the throbbing sound . I was always waiting for the engineer, when the train stopped to take on water and coal. The engineer would get out with big oil can and pump a few carefully aimed drops on the key parts on the engines exterior, he was more than just oiling he was checking moving parts and hoses at the same time. I adopted the oil can policy on my farm, even in my power wagon just in the corner of the box i keep a small oil can for door hinges hood hinges locks ect ect.Even on the tractor i keep a oil can so when i take a brake i stop and oil up chains and bushings and so on ,it adds up to lot labour saving break downs.Well to much of good thing can be a little trouble too . Yesterday i was baling, the last hay of the year. As i turned a corner i heard a funny sound at the baler the fly wheel came off , and rolled like a wheel about 200 feet, then fell over . I had to get a nbr to help me lift it back on it weighed about 250lbs, my nbr was quick to say it was a well oiled machine may be to well oiled , the bolt that held the fly wheel when right back nice and easy .Too bad I never checked to see if it was tight over the past fourty years ~ J
