If its gray cast iron (engine block), nickel rod will work fine, it's the technique you use that's important. There are two types of rods; machinable and non-machinable. Use non-machinable unless the surface will require machining.

Technique:

1. Grind the surface area of the crack to remove impurities from its casting.
2. “V” the crack.
3. Drill a 1/8 hole ahead of each end of the crack. This is to prevent further cracking.
4. Start at the hole, filling it and welding towards the center of the crack line an inch at a time. Peen the weld as it cools, but not to much or it creates a hardened area. Peening is to produce a tight weld.
5. Start at opposite end and do the same, alternating ends until you meet in the center. Peen and allow your welds to cool each time.

Alloy Cast Irons/Steels

These are made by adding certain alloying elements such as copper, aluminum, nickel, titanium, etc. These are added to improve the parts tensile strength, machinability, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance. Caution has to be used in welding to prevent destroying the elements and this is where pre-heating the part to prevent destroying the elements plays a role in the welding process. Clip tests are used to determine if the part needs pre-heating before welding.

Technique:

1. The casting has to be thicker than 3/8ths of an inch.
2. Use a ½ thick 2 inch square piece of steel and weld it to the casting using a convex contour fillet weld.
3. Allow to cool.
4. Break piece off using a hammer.
5. If the failure is through the weld center, no preheat is necessary.
6. If the failure pulls out parent metal, then pre-heating is required.

If your not a welder, you may want to contact a pump company to make the repair or take the pump apart and take it to a welding shop.
