Todays brazing rods are better/easier, and stronger than mild steel, lots stronger than cast iron. But you will need oxy-acetylene torch.

Grind a v-prep, pre-heat until the area is nearly red, then adjust torch to slightly oxygen rich- the extra oxygen will burn away any carbon. Use of flux-coated rod is easier then dipping the rod into a can of flux every few seconds, but costs lots more per inch. But Home Depot sells the coated rod.
