If it sounds like you'd rather have safety than authenticity, I'd recommend you consider an array of small self-resetting circuit breakers. The two trolley buses we have at the mine tour have that kind of setup. The breakers themselves are about 1" x 1/2" by 5/8", with #10 screw terminals coming out the back which serve as mechanical mounting and electrical connection. They mount to a heavy copper bus bar, which in turn is mounted to the firewall with insulated screws. The "mopar" trolley (it has a slant 6 in it) has about a dozen of these breakers, and the new diesel trolley has about 2 dozen. They seem to have made no effort to combine circuits, which is good because if there's a short on one circuit, it won't take anything else out along with it. I like this system because it's easy to expand, and there's never a danger of not having the necessary fuse on hand. Usually on automotive circuits, the breaker or fuse only blows if there's a dead short somewhere. It usually takes me quite a few fuses to find the actual problem. With a self-resetting breaker, you hear it clicking on and off, so you know right away which circuit is bad, and then you can rummage around in the wiring pulling and wiggling on things until you find the problem or the breaker stops clicking. If I was starting a new set of wiring on a vehicle from scratch and didn't need it to be authentic, I'd use a bunch of those mini-breakers.
