Indeed it was!
The roof we built was like a cross. Both ridges were 32' long, intersecting at both of their centerpoints. The house was 32' x 32'. This made each side a gable. The 4 valleys came down to the 4 corners. Therefore, there were no eaves and no practical way to vent the roof. We installed 2" foil faced foam to the bottoms of the rafters (cathedral ceiling of course!) and left a small gap in the roof sheathing at the ridges. We installed the roof shingles and just before buttoning it up, an insulation subcontractor blew densepack cellulose insulation into the cavities, packing it in tight to prevent or minimize air movement. We then closed it up and voila, a hot roof.
In retrospect, I think an 8" layer of foam insulation shot right onto the bottom of the sheathing would have performed better but that was not in the budget.
