Brian,
I am on my 2nd Cummins turbo diesel, the first a 98 24 valve; the 2ns a 2004.5 HO output. My story mirrors Paul's, though my milage,(loaded with my gooseneck trailer is about 2,000 pounds heavier than his), is about 15mpg, while empty is about 22 mpg.
I have the quad cab 3500 6 speed 4 wheel drive. I have used synthetic oils, and changed the filters regularly. My only problem in 82,000 miles was a spun unit bearing on the drivers front axle. Maintainence has not been more difficult or expensive than my previous gas powered cars/trucks. I have found my diesels to be both reliable, and economical, and would recommend them to anyone.
Eddie
