I bought my first CTD Dodge in '03, because I wanted the towing power they are known for and because the new HO 5.9 was so much quieter. After about 50k, I decided it was too quiet so I straight-piped it. I put another 25k on it and sold it to my son and bought a new '06, which I straight-piped right away. I put 60k on it in 2 years, and decided to buy a real low mile '98 12v to use as an every day driver. I straight-piped this truck, added a new fuel plate, big air filter, and some other goodies. Mike is right about buying new, but if you are going to buy used, look for an early '98, which is a 12valve engine. These mechanical beasts are much simpler to upgrade and no computers are involved. Look into replacing the front hubs (always engaged) with Dyna-Trac hub kit. This gives you free-wheeling hubs for highway driving and an extra couple mpgs. A manual transmission is better for adding an exhaust brake, which I recommend for towing. And get into the TDR website. www.turbodieselregister.com
