Brian, I'm on my 3 CTD and my son is on his 3rd as company trucks. Mine is an '01 with a six speed manual and a service body. I pull a trailer all the time including a 35ft two place truck hauler. The only problems I've had are the water pump went out at 128,000 and the front hubs had to be replaced which is costly. It's a dual wheel with 3:54 gears and my son's is an'03 single wheel 3500 with 3:73 gears. We both have 4" exhaust and chips which comes in handy when really pulling. Oh and they are fun to play with on occasion when we crank them up. You say you are looking for a regular cab, do yourself a favor and get the extended cab. You won't regret it trust me. My first truck was a 78 ClubCab which was replaced by an 86 regular cab. The 86 was a good truck but I really missed the Club Cab. I didn't get another until my 96 and I'll never have a regular cab again. Like the others have said the Cummins is the way to go for towing. I don't feel a lot of difference between the '01 and '03 as far as stability goes when towing the same loads. The '03 does get better mileage even with the automatic and 3:73 gears but I have the service body loaded at all time too. Good luck with the hunt.
