Why I like Wallace

We're having our annual labor day flea market this weekend, so of course I had to go look around. Lots of variety, from snooty antique dealers who call everything a "piece" to guys with a pile of broken, rusty junk that they mucked out of a collapsed garage someplace, and if they don't sell it, it's gonna be a hungry week for them. This year was a little shy on the old truck parts, and nothing Mopar at all that I could see, but this one rifle kept calling to me. I asked the woman the story of it and she said it was her father's, that he owned a hardware store in town for years, and that he died recently. It turns out I know his son, who still lives here. So, to make a long story short, I walked away $350 lighter, but with a real nicely-kept Remington 03-A3 (Springfield 1903 .30-06), that not only looks to be a fine gun, but has local provenance, having been present at the (locally) famous shootout at the Eagles lodge. There were probably a 20 or so guns for sale there at various tables, mostly rifles, but a couple revolvers. There's something refreshing about going to a flea market where people sell guns right along with monkey wrenches, kerosene lamps, ugly paintings, and homemade jerky. I bet they don't do that in L.A. And strange to say, we have absolutely zero gang-banging or mugging here.

I'll probably go back Monday for a bargain pass and see what's left that's cheap that the seller doesn't want to take home.
