I've done that on other motors and generators. Sometimes you can rest the spring on the edge of the brush holder, or as you described, against the side of the brush. Unfortunately these springs are solidly mounted and stiff and will only push in the middle of the back of the brush. I can't move them anywhere near the sides.

Somehow they assembled these things in the factory, and I assume they didn't have people reaching into impossibly tight places with weird tools and futzing with things they couldn't see in order to get them together. There has to be an easy way.
