Our town is infested with them. They have no natural predators, and they breed like rats. At dusk is the worst, because that's when they're commuting from the daytime feeding areas to the bedding-down areas.

The best way is, of course, to drive really slowly. (Not difficult in a PW.)

The theory here among the experts at the Nature Conservancy is that they think a car is another animal that has been spooked, so they need to run alongside it to escape the imaginary predator. If you watch deer running away from something, you see them nudge each other and criss-cross their paths as they run. When they try that with a car, since the car can't swerve, the deer runs into the car.

What we do, if we have enough time to react, is to turn the headlights off, hit the brakes, and blow the horn. That seems to stop them in their tracks, and make them run away.
