I'm glad you troubleshot down to the actual cause rather than just shotgunning it. I also appreciate thee picture because now we know what to look for. It would be interesting to know how the stiff spring got in there. Was it the right pump for some other vehicle, did the guy who rebuilt it just grab some spring out of his junk box that looked about right after he lost the correct one, or did he deliberately put that extra-stiff spring in thinking that "more is better" when it comes to fuel pressure? That stiff one looks like it must be at least 4x as stiff as the correct one.
