Ken, the first tranny in reverse makes you go backward and the second tranny in reverse makes you go doubly backward - which turns out to forward again. Because reverse gears are typically very low geared, you get extremely low forward gearing by this method. About the only downside of this method is the extra length of the drive train. Imagine having two 6-speed trannys back to back for a total of 36 forward speeds times 2 speeds for the transfer case to give 72 total forward speeds. Of course, many of the speeds will be mostly unusable because ratios will be duplicated or nearly the same for some combinations.
