Also known as a "brownie" the idea has been
around almost as long as trucks. I have driven
trucks with 5 speed main box, 4 speed "brownie"
(auxiliary trans); 6 speed Alison auto and 4
speed brownie, 13 speed and 4 speed brownie
and (talk about getting lost in the gears)
a 13 speed, 4 speed brownie and 2 speed rear
end. That is 104 gears forward and 8 back.
The problem is, sometimes you forget where
you left it on the last shift....
You can also double transfer cases and if you check
you'll find out that the driveshaft flange is
splined the same as the input shaft on some
NP 420's so that with imagination, you can double
those up under your truck. Face the tranny backwards
for a 6.27 to 1 (or so) overdrive...
