M37s seem much better offroad than Power Wagons due to shorter wheelbase (more maneuverable) and much more supple springs. Both benefit from very low gearing in the diffs, but both can benefit from rear or front and rear Lockrights. But a front LR should probably also have power steering added. Everything in the power train is quite strong except the rear axle shafts sometimes break.
As far as engine swaps, Chrysler 318s and 360s have been put in; also of course GM small blocks. Also Chrysler slant 6s. And my favorite is diesels: commonly Cummins 4BT, Detroit Diesel 3-53, occaisonally Perkins 4.236 and Hercules 3.7 DT/DTA. Any engine swap probably nneds 4.89s and a 5speed makes it even better. Also, I personally have a low opinion of the military ND tire, both on and off road. I think a good radial like a 36" radial Super Swamper or preferably Michelin 9.00 or 11.00R16 (36, 37, or almost 39" tall) is the best tire for the vehicle and rims; a radial is especially desirable in sand due to the ability to bulge at 10-20 psi instead of 3-5 psi.
