Had a similar broken axle stub to remove from an m-37 rear (thank God) pig. Had to remove the pig, and since magnet idea failed, had to drill, tap and use a slide hammer to remove the 1.25" chunk. As to front wheel driving the PW, just remember, all 70-ish (90-ish if you're very optimistic) of the horsies are going to one axle-unless you've gotten a locking differential. Drive gently, and you should have a smooth trip. Plan on hearing a new song from the transfer case gears-they'll seat differently and will let you hear about it! Keep 'em rolling.
