First of all, Toyota Tundras will develope mechanical problems after 22 years too, so pay no attention to that post (unless I missed something between you two guys).

Do you know what carb you have on there? Is it still the original? The black exhaust and stumbling are caused by running too rich. It could be choke related, but it could be a stuck needle valve or non-floating or bent floats as well.

Do you have a service manual for your truck? If not, buy one or go to the library and make copies of the carb section, which will help you identify which one you have, how it works, and what you can fix on it.

It's time consuming tracking down these problems, but they are not difficult to solve.
