Pulling the third member isn't extremely tough but I have to say Fred's method would definitely be easier.
When I removed my third member to inspect and install a posi unit, the gear ratio was stamped on the side of the ring gear. Wouldn't even have to count the teeth and do the division.
To find the gear ratio, I use Fred's method but instead of turning the wheel twice, I just multiply the turns on the drive shaft by two.
