I have a horse trailer built with two mobile home axles.
These axles are supposed to hold 6000 lbs each. That's plenty
of strength but there is one problem. The brakes on these things
were designed as throw-away items, to be rolled to the site and
parked forever. Horse trailers usually have brakes on the rear
axle, as this one did. I finally swapped out the rear axle for
a completely new, custom-made one with the same weight rating,
good brakes and hubs which fit my existing wheels. The wheels
are the type with the big center hole and are held on with cleats.
I forget the name for that type of wheel but it is common on mobile
homes.

The new axle cost something like $250.00 as I recall. I got it from
Caple-Shaw Industries. Their web site is www.capleshaw.com. Not much of
a site but you can call the 800 number or email for info.
