I often use a bow and arrow to shoot a thin line over a branch 30 to 40 feet up. Then I feed a thiker line then another ticker line. I end up with a 1 1/2 inch line with a loop in the end. I pull the loop back to the ground and feed the other end through it and tighten it around the tree. I then take the loose end and attach it to my MU2 which using a block or 2. I tighten up on the line. I then do my undercut the start the back cut. I will tighten up on the line quite a bit and then pull on the winch again. Then I almost finish the back cut. I may tighten again on the winch. That usually get thing going in the right direction. I only do this if the tree is leaning in the wrong direction or if the house is behind the tree. I have never been more than 10 degrees off so far.

One time I had a 100' fir 5' from a building and leaning back towards the building. I did the above and cut the backcut most of the way. I then put a lot of tension on the cable (I ran cable all the way with no line). I did a little more backcut. Then pulled the tree over with the winch.

My friend did a similar thing. He had a block going to a second tree with a 90 degree angle to his jeep. He tensioned up and all Heck broke loose. The tree that that block was attached to uprooted. The upper branches covered his jeep. Taking a closer look the builder had cut all the roots on one side of the tree to put in the driveway. So when he pulled against it over it came. He also made the mistake of having the block 5' up the tree so he could get the cable to clear a fence.

Bottom line I am having someone do this one as I have very few options and have to be dead accurate to drop it. I have taken quite a few trees down and know my limits.
