Flare and inverted flare fittings seal by clamping the flared end of the tube against the corresponding flare in the fitting. The threads are straight threads and will not have fluid on them if the fitting is tight. I've seem lots of cases where guys dope them up with teflon, pipe dope, and even string, but that's wrong. If a flare fitting leaks, there's usually a nick in the flare surface or a piece of dirt in it. I have been known to put a little bit of pipe dope on the flare surface itself as a field expedient to temporarily fix a leaky fuel fitting. Brake lines have way more pressure and simply must seal with good-fitting metal-metal contact.
