I doubt it was really your gears so much as your suspension. Let's face it, without modification, these old trucks suspension is a joke and limited to inches not feet as a modern offroad vehicles. Think about if you were "sidehilling" with the lower side of the truck lower than the driver's side and your driver's front went over that same rock...... If you keep springs in it, get some 63" chevys or call National Spring and have them make you a couple sets. I thought you were putting a Dana 70 in the rear?
Your "gap" between ratios needs to be addressed but it not the main culprit. Hav fun.
