Glen, that sounds like vapor lock in the fuel system. I've installed electric fuel pumps in several vehicles near the fuel tanks and only use them when needed to overcome vapor lock. The mechanical pump does most of the work, and the electric pump gives the system more pressure to prevent vapor lock. With today's more volatile fuel, vapor lock is much more common.
