Anecdotal story; in the early 1960's I was looking for special heim joints and a piece of all thread with left and right handed threads on opposite ends. Several shops told me to go to Mercury Hardware, they might have the parts I needed. I walked into the store, and on the back wall, over the counter, hung a 6 foot long, 9" diameter, left handed drill bit for a 8" chuck size! The man behind the counter said, "can I help you?"
I thought "Yes!"...and he did!
There are still one or two shops like that around, but the demise of American Manufacturing means they are few and far between. Cherish them and patronize them, their days are numbered.
