You're sure that the pump is now pumping gas out its outlet port, into the carburetor bowl?
Take off the air cleaner, and observe the throat of the carb as "soldier #2" pumps the gas, or you fiddle with the accelerator linkage. You should see a spray and/or wisps of gasoline vapor going into the carb.
Is there an inline filter between the pump and the carb? Could be clogged.
