She was refitted at Bremerton during the Reagan years with missile air defenses and other upgrades and was used during Desert Storm for her last service. She steamed into Pearl Harbor for the 50th annivesary of the Japanese surrender, apparently to await decommissioning. A big group of vets and others petitioned the gov to retire her at Pearl. A big volunteer organization, including hundreds of current active duty personnel, donate thousands of hours each year to help maintain and restore.
