My truck woes on rally day.

To begin with you should all know I got my truck to run great last night. Cracked, dry rotted coilwire insulation pinched between the coil and the military distributor housing. Took out the distributor, put it on the bench (where you can see what the heck you're looking at) and one glance shows exposed wire strands. Swap it out with one of the extra's from the spare parts room and vroom!!, off to the races. This was a classic devil chasing story. 2 weeks ago I had multiple fuel problems, a tank full of crap gas, filter fell off in tank, clogged elect pump inlet, yada yada yada. Fixed all that but 5 days later on Rally Fri night new problems, in the woods, bed filled with little girls and moms, pitch black, ton's of mud holes and water, and a stalling truck. I was chasing other trucks, couldn't catch them, Frank took the extreme route that I wasn't going to try since I couldn't keep it running, so we were by ourselves, I'm wondering what am I going to do with these people if the truck quit for good. Walking in the mud, in the dark, didn't sound too good. W300utiline (copilot) and I could get a cell signal once in awhile but not good enough to make a rescue call. Anyway other trucks finally show up and Tom Covino dragged me home. Convinced it was still fuel related, Sat AM we remove and clean entire carb assuming main jet was clogged, drain 17 gallons of crap gas, purge lines, no luck, then clean points (without removing dist). Swap coils (without removing dist), still no luck. Ride time, no truck, so Worchester comb over Ken offers to let me drive his M38. That was a treat, never drove a vintage jeep. Pleasant change from westling M37 gears adn steering. Lot's of fun. This pic is my trail view from combover Ken's M38. Many times on this forum the real mechanics stress the importance of yanking the dist, put it on the bench and go through it. Well, guess what? Dist frayed wire probs have happend to Frank and I a number of times, and we've only found them with the dist on the bench. The recent fuel probs had us convinced it was still fuel related since a point check and swapped coil did nothing. So there you go, truck runs like crap? Pull the dist, put it on a bench, and look at every single thing. I had it running in 30 minutes last night. So I went for a ride today. It's still really muddy. However, I did get the chance to drive combover Ken's M38, so I still had a blast. But having a bum truck at a homegame rally is sort of depressing.
