I wouldn't have a problem using one with brakes, either surge or electric. Tires ought to be higher load range than for hauling subcompacts.

Yes on the end plates for rear, save any broken axles for making plates- they need a counter bore inside to clear the sealing surface on the outer bearing nut- if your truck has those.
