Thanks. I won't mess with the advance springs. And since there's no shaft seal, I won't try to get the shaft out. I'll just clean the whole thing up and put it back in. The main reason I took it out was to fix the primary wire that was broken where it goes into the distributor. As for the possible clogged vent, I had everything off the passenger side of the engine last winter and cleaned it all up so hopefully the PCV valve and plumbing are now clean. It's all rigid pipe so it's not trivial to take it apart and put it back together.
