For anyone wondering, I took the air cleaner apart and, to my surprise, it wasn't really like the one on the 48 Plymouth referenced in this thread, despite nearly identical outside appearances.

The filter media was not removable, nor was it in any kind of canister insert. Rather, once taking the nut off the top, the filter media and screen came out as one piece. To remove the filter media, I would have needed to physically cut the metal to remove it, which I wasn't geared up to do.

So, in the end, I removed the sludge and replaced the oil. I didn't rinse it in kerosene, but maybe I will someday. At least I found out there was oil in it, and simultaneously learned not to tilt the filter assembly while removing it :-)
