One shift lever may have forced past the other shift lever, causing the effect you describe. If you can force the one shift lever back by the other shift lever, that might solve your problem, but be careful that you don't damage something while doing that.
The shift levers have little bump stops cast into their bases so they won't go past each other - if the cast bump stops are on the wrong sides of the levers, they either have forced past each other, or they were removed and replaced in the wrong position.
