The OD 540 was used by Chev/GMC, IH, Studebaker, Ford, and Dodge. Input shafts and companion flanges for the rear were available for each application. If you have the right several pieces you can adapt one from any application to any other application.

Dodge did use the OD 540 in some applications, most notably school buses. The 540 OD trans I have in my 1967 W300 came from a Studebaker and was converted, so to speak, by the salvage yard from which I bought the transmission in the mid 1980's.

Direct is always direct, the question is, is the direct mode 4th or 5th? Many who lack experience pass over an OD 540 because they try the same position for 5th as their direct 5 speed, and that position will always be direct. You have to try the 4th gear position to see if it is a reduction or an overdrive situation. With it sitting on the ground, you can turn the input shaft, observe the output shaft, and determine the relationship.
