Growing up in Manitowoc in the 50's - 60's, it was common to see blue collar America riding into the shipyard on a bicycle, dressed in blue denim overalls and a faded blue denim work shirt. A black metal lunch box slung over the handlebars.
Those who didn't ride bikes had family members waiting to pick them up outside the yard. Two car families were management, not workers.
The city (33,000) was proud of its products (don't forget Manitowoc ice machines, introduced to keep the workforce going when work fell off in the ship yard or crane divisions).
Welfare was not an occupation.
Dodge content: my uncle owned the wrecker and ambulance service. His baby wrecker painted in Manitowoc Crane red: a 1948 Dodge Power Wagon.
