Normal situation is to get tighter as they wear, and slip. Not to grind due to non-release.
What/how much oil? The gear oil slows the gear quite a bit, leakage means harder to shift.
Also, if the clutch was 'stuck', rusted to the flywheel, when they get broken loose it may have chipped a small piece off the clutch which is still stuck to the flywheel, making some friction and keeping the tranny spinning. When this happens, you usually don't get a good lock-up either, clutch will slip too.
