Will the crank rock at all? Then it's valves.

If the crank rocks say 1/2", then the pistons/crank is free, the valves are stuck.

The first power wagon we bought had had the head left off, in the rain, for six months. The valves were rusty, but the crank turned. The valves would just get stuck up. So we sprayed wd-40 on the valves, and tapped them down with a hammer, then cranked it with the hand crank, sprayed and tapped, crank,spraytap... until 11 out of 12 fell all by themselves, and the 12th just needed the slightest touch. So while my brother put a new head gasket on ($6), I got underneath and took the drain plug out of the pan. Water came out, and when the sludge started to ooze, I put the plug back in, didn't even change the oil. $231 invested in a '41 Radio Panel/paddy wagon.

Tore down the engine about two years later. Couldn't believe it even ran. Several broken tappets, probably from forcing them with the rusty valves. Valves that looked like daisys, broken rings, broken ring lands, piston pin circlips fell out as the pistons were removed, leaving the pin holes so burred up we had to carve the burrs away to remove the pins.

Back before the web, in the days of ignorant kids, and cheap, disposable clunkers...
