No, you are not asking too much. They should read 1.000. So you are closing the jaws that are wiped clean and pushing the zero button. Opening the jaws from zero to close around the 1.000 block and you're getting 1.0015? and .9985 on the unknown brand?
If they were both over I would tell you to inspect the block for a nick. Must not be that. How old are the batteries in the calipers? Maybe need to be replaced. Check the jaws on the calipers for nicks and stone them if necessary. Do they slide smoothly? Coat with 3 in 1 oil. and try again. This probably won't fix it. I'm grasping at anything. I can't think of any other fix. They're not that far off. You can still use them for most things. I would not rely on any calipers for an accurate measurement. Micrometers are the last word for accuracy. Calipers can give different readings by different people by how they hold the calipers and how much force they exert on the jaws. The calipers have very small flats ground on the inside measuring blades and give a slightly unaccurate measurement when measuring holes. Again an inside micrometer will give a better measurement on holes.
Forgive me if you know all this.
