I doubt you could pop the snap ring while its close in on the hub. It sits in a ways on the rear of the hub and has precious little to grab onto. If the bearing spun and welded onto the spindle. its going to be a real problem to get off without damage to hub.
Without seeing it, I am not sure how I would attack it. If you try to force the hub off, the snap ring groove may break and you then have a destroyed hub.
I am with Chris, some persuasion prying working all around the hub may liberate it.
